Ranks and Insignia

There are two categories for all admissions to the Order in the rank of Knight or above, these being "Category of Grace" and "Category of Justice".
The category of Justice is restricted to postulants who have proved hereditary nobility from each of his four grandparents or, when paternal line alone is used, from his paternal great-grandfather. Those members who are unable to furnish proof of hereditary nobility will be admitted in the category of Grace. According to ancient traditions ecclesiastical Members holding the rank of a Cardinal within the Holy Roman Catholic Church may also be admitted in the category of Justice.
Members admitted in the category of Justice are entitled to wear the Order’s Cross of Justice. The membership in both categories is divided into Affiliates and Members.
